From Call to Dry House

1

Call and describe the water

Tell the provider where the water is coming from, how long it has been running and whether it has reached a finished room. That decides what equipment is needed.

2

Stop the source and extract

The first job on site is shutting the water off if it is still running, then pulling standing water out of the lowest rooms with extraction equipment.

3

Dry, with readings to show it

Air movers and dehumidifiers are placed against the wet materials, and moisture readings are taken on return visits until the readings match dry parts of the house.

4

Repair and hand the room back

Once the structure is dry, ask the independent provider to explain what has to be rebuilt and confirm the price before the room is put back together.

Before the Provider Visits

If water is still running, close the main shutoff. In most homes here it is on the incoming line where it enters through the front basement or crawl space wall, near the meter. Stay out of any room where water is near outlets, cords, the furnace or the electrical panel, and keep children and pets away from water that came up a drain or in from outside.

If it is safe to move around, lift what you can off the wet floor, put foil or a block under furniture legs and take photographs before anything is moved. Do not start pulling up flooring or cutting drywall; the damage is easier to document, and to claim, while it is still as found.

Expect the equipment to stay for several days and to make noise. Drying is finished when the readings say the materials match the dry parts of the house, which is also when the repair quote makes sense.
